So I’ve been here in the Netherlands a full week now, and I’m slowly but surely settling in. I got over my jet lag fairly quickly, which is a very good thing. And I’m slowly, slowly, adjusting to Dutch food portions. I’m hungry about 85% of the time, but I’m just suffering through it until my body gets used to eating like a fourth of what I used to eat in the States. Which isn’t a bad thing necessarily, I’ve already lost some weight just in this week. But it DOES make me quite cranky. Sorry Marcel!
But it’s really nice being back in the city of Utrecht. I love the city and am quite happy that it’s my adopted home. I’ve already visited a new museum since I’ve been here and plan to visit several more before my Dutch class starts in about three weeks. I’m excited and extremely nervous about the class. You all know that I do daily Duolingo courses but they’ve gotten pretty hard lately and some of them I need Marcel to help me because they’re weird tenses or constructions that are difficult to put together. So I’m hoping this class will help me because I’m still too shy to try and speak any broken Dutch. Plus, most everywhere I go when I try to speak Dutch, the people just automatically switch to English. Which is both helpful and not helpful. Once I get more language skills under my belt and I start to feel a bit more confident I’ll ask them to stick to Dutch to help me practice. Also Marcel is threatening to speak Dutch to me at home, which quite frankly is terrifying. For some reason I don’t mind messing up in front of strangers, but stumbling through the language with family? I can’t do it.
Also for all of you in southern California… Ah ha! It’s like a good 35 degrees colder here in the Netherlands and it’s amazing! No more 80-90 degree weather in winter! Although technically it’s spring, though it seems that Holland hasn’t received the memo yet. Still I love it. Even though I’m almost always cold and Marcel will say that I complain constantly, I still prefer this weather over Los Angeles weather.
I’ll try to take some pictures in the coming days, new ones this time, not 500 more pictures of the Dom Tower. It’s funny, every time I take a picture of the Dom, Marcel always says, “Another one?! Don’t you already have tons of pictures of it??” And I always say it’s because I like it and it’s pretty. Which is true. So maybe I will take more pictures of it, we’ll see.
